Arrrggghhh! Happy #HumpBay ye scurvied scallywags! A great way to celebrate is with the hearty, traditional scent of bay rum - with Wet Shaving Products Bay Rum #soap and #aftershave!
For this review, I won't get into the performance of the soap too much. I did an extensive review of Black Amber Vanille which you can check out for more details. Long and short of it is that it's a very nice performer for the money. Not top tier, but better than average, certainly. So let's talk about the scent specifically and the aftershave in general, which is really what differs here.
We based our bay rum off of a two century old recipe we found. Combining all the true classic bay rum scents, we went truly old school with this blend. Using only essential oils, this is what bay rum is supposed to smell like.
The scent of Bay Rum is along the lines of an "unadulterated" (i.e. traditional) bay rum. It's boozy and spicy with just a hint of citrus. While some artisans try to make their bay rums stand out by adding a unique hook, Bay Rum makes no apologies and flaunts its origins and long history with a true-to-original accord. In fact, the notes are West Indies bay leaf, rum, lime, cinnamon and allspice. It doesn't get more pure than that. The scent strength is as it should be, especially for a bay rum - robust and strong. One problem with most bay rums however, is that the scent doesn't last very long. You generally get an hour, maybe a couple, tops. Bay Rum stands out from the pack, if only by a stretch... I get a few hours of longevity which is above average (but not truly "long term"). As for the performance, it acts just like a true bay rum should as well - plenty of alcoholic and spicy burn with a finish that leaves your face feeling great, as all of the WSP aftershaves do. I'm definitely digging this version of a classic.
Hardware selection was an easy one today, as I went with the black (like a pirate's heart) #StandardRazors razor with a #PolSilver blade on shave two, for a smooth, close near-BBS result. Also an obvious choice was the custom skull brush with a badger knot, which made loading the WSP soap heavily an easy task. The goods were whipped up in the #GTP scuttle.
Another great scent from the folks at #wsp_shaving - joining the ranks of Black Amber Vanille and Mahogany as my favorites. The scent strength on all of these is robust and long-lasting, or at the very least, above-average. The underlying soap base is also a solid performer and overall, the combo is a good value... What's not to love?
