Shaving Product Review - Dr. Jon's Shaving Soap Co. "Hex" & "Krampus"
It's fall and Halloween is just around the corner - but the SOTD doesn't need to be scary! Featuring Dr. Jon's Hex #soap and Krampus #aftershave!
I've reviewed Hex before and what I said then, still stands today... The scent just falls flat overall and doesn't really do anything for me. Of course, it's discontinued now anyway. But like the rest of the line, I love the label and thought it'd be a great autumn shave. Fortunately, the performance is quite good! It's based on the original version of the soap, rather than the current v2.0. It's interesting, too... When new, it was extremely soft, which turned more than a few people off. Maybe not because it was soft so much... More like a whipped/mousse consistency than creamy/chunky like most soft soaps and croaps. Fast forward to today, a year later, and the soap is quite hard. This leads me to believe that the soap, originally, just wasn't cured enough. Whereas before you'd need a decidedly wetter and/or softer brush - now you need one with some backbone.
For the finish I went with Krampus! I know, it's not the holidays yet, but this is a scent for all time. I did a first impression report on it as well as more in-depth review as well. Long and short of it, it has notes of honey, myrrh, cider, berries, anise and fear. It comes off as a sort of woodsy, spicy, berry vibe. I dig it. The performance of #DrJonsSoapCo aftershave is also very good, like the soaps. My one gripe might be the alum. Back in the day, I thought I enjoyed it being in aftershaves, but these days I don't care for it so much. It gives your skin a dryer, tighter feeling. This of course rules out 95% of what PAA makes as well (among other reasons). It's nice to use, but I prefer other formulas day-to-day these days.
Hardware included the black #StandardRazors razor fitted with the same #PolSilver from last week on shave three along with a scary, custom skull brush to whip the ghoulish suds into submission in the #GTP scuttle.
I love going back to older hardware and software, and I prefer to keep everything I have in rotation. Of course, as The Collection has grown, it just takes longer and longer to get back to things... But now that the holidays are near, Krampus will definitely be coming out to play more often!
